| Tango
is The Argentinian restaurant in Puerto Banús. It serves the best food,
has the most stylish interior and is owned and run by a man to whom the
restaurant business is both work and fun. The man is Juan Carlos Ruffa, he moved to Spain in 1986 and he opened his famous restaurant in 1991. The story is typically Argentinian: a place for him and his friends to gather and sip a mate and exchange news about home. An evident need for expansion, a friendly architect -in this case, the wonderful Graciela Leanza- to help with the decoration and a lot of friends chipping in with a hand. This is the way all restaurants should be starting from scratch and building up over a period of time. Tango,

You can't miss Tango.
A little further up from the cinema, on the other side of the street, with
big glittering letters outside telling you you're there, and the wonderful
surprise of going in and seeing all those paintings of tango dancers on
walls painted in a subtle purple, with lots of candles everywhere. Ruffa
himself wasn't too sure about the colour scheme at the beginning, but he
loves it now. There is a winding staircase leading up to a second floor
that is open only on weekends, and an enormous still life in one corner
that he tells us was done to hide a garage entrance. The word spread quickly, and at the beginning, the customers were mostly Argentinians. Ruffa remembers a time when the restaurant wouldn't close until six in the morning, with everybody just sitting around eating and drinking, and it was not unusual for the waiters to suddenly break into a tango dance on the spot.
Ruffa no estaba demasiado

| Our meal was excellent.
The usual plate of olives
and aubergines
in spicy sauce on a beautifully set table, and I started with an Arollado
Argentino, which was a kind of
quiche stuffed with vegetables, making for a lovely mix of sweet and
sour. My Argentinian companion was less impressed with the Provoleta
a la Parrilla, which was
basically grilled Italian cheeses, but I think he was trying to show me
how much he knew about Italian cheese. For the main course we had Chuletas de Cordero and Entrecot Argentino, and ther were no reservations her at all. But a word of warning: if you ask for it well done, it gets well done. Better stick to "en su punto" and you'll get the best-cooked meat this side of the River Plate. In the Argentinian style, the meat comes alone, so order salad and chips to keep it company. We ordered one dessert and were asked if we'd like to share it, so they brought out a delicious Panqueques con dulce de leche (pancakes with caramel filling) on 2 separate plates. Don't you just love Argentinians!
